view from casa monica hotel St Augustine

My hubby and I enjoyed a getaway to the Casa Monica Hotel for our 13th Anniversary.  This was our view.  We also enjoyed looking out over the fountain and green in front of the Lightner Museum- it's beautiful as the sun rises!  The view, along with the memory of a fun weekend away, make this photo Picture Perfect to me.    Do you have a Picture Perfect photo to share?  Email it for publication: SimplyStAugustine@gmail.com … [Read more...]

International Golf Parkway, the Scenic Route to St. Augustine

I-95 is only a few minutes faster.  Get off the fast track and enjoy this scenic drive to St. Augustine! When heading South on I-95, take Exit 323 and turn Left onto International Golf Parkway.  (World Golf Village is to your Right.)  You'll know when you get to the pretty part... I love driving under the canopy of trees and smile in understanding when I see vacationers pulled off of the narrow road to snap a picture memory. When you get to the light, turn Right (go straight if you need a last Starbucks fix before choosing to go local in St. Augustine).  … [Read more...]

The Floridian

The Floridian Restaurant St Augustine

The 2nd best part of eating out with all {6} kiddos is getting to try so many different entrees at each restaurant!  The best part is making up funny comebacks to all the "are they all yours" comments... but I digress!! We started with The Floridian's soup of the day (a curried vegetable- unique but I'd order off the regular menu next time) and a cheese plate featuring Sweet Grass Dairy's fantastic cheeses for our appetizers.  We shared the Spicy Melt (a blackened local fish sandwich), Not Your Mamma's Meatloaf Sandwich, a Fresh Catch Floridian dinner plate and {and... … [Read more...]

Matanzas- our secret St Augustine Fishing Spot

Look closely, then close your eyes.  You're right if you're imagining those grasses swaying in a gentle breeze while the sun warms you. There are many creeks and flats in South St. Augustine.  This is a quiet spot my hubby and I like to escape to- he to wet his line and I to clear my mind.  We hold hands while driving out- sometimes {kindly} passing kayakers, herons and the occasional tailing redfish. It's another reason we love St. Augustine. … [Read more...]

Fort Menendez

Fort Menendez Hands on St Augustine

When someone guarantees, "You'll love your experience... or it's free," you know it's gonna be good. Fort Menendez at Old Florida Museum in St. Augustine is that good!  It's a fun, hands-on way to "become a settler and live in Florida's past."  {shh... it's educational, too!} I love museums- especially touchable ones!  But don't worry, this place is fun for those with museumophobia!  Imagine the photo ops: kids in Timucuan Indian garb, Spanish Soldier Uniforms, hand-dipping candles, grinning because suddenly their chores aren't all that tough... I could tell you all … [Read more...]

The Hyppo

The Hyppo Gourmet Popsicles St Augustine

One word: YUM. Let's see, so far I've tried: Coconut Coconut, Datil Strawberry, Straight-Up Strawberry, Mango, Key Lime... There are so many gourmet popsicle flavors at The Hyppo, and they change seasonally, even our big family hasn't covered them all!  (But I'm no help because I always order a spicy one... no variety here.) Cool off with your fave flave as you stroll around Old Town, enjoy it in the adorable storefront on Hypolita & Charlotte, Stroll along St. George Street after buying from the newest location or pack it in a foil-lined to go bag to enjoy at … [Read more...]

I SPY Color

SPY Restaurant St Augustine Flowers

I love these flowers! They are intensely colored, uniquely shaped and prolific somewhere in historic St. Augustine!  Can you find them? They grow on the fence of SPY cuisine off Hypolita, which I hear is a great place for sushi. … [Read more...]

The Original Cafe Eleven

Cafe Eleven St. Augustine Beach

Cafe Eleven is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... except it isn't scary. My parents discovered a cozy cafe across from the beach with much better coffee than the hotel's.  Fresh, affordable breakfasts drew them back each morning and they reminisce abouut their early morning coffees on the patio. My hubby and I bought a Groupon to a hip local joint with some great brews on tap and a good vegetarian menu (don't worry, they have fish & meatloaf, too).  Cool music was a bonus and we later learned they host concerts (reasonable ticket prices- I've seen $8 ish to … [Read more...]
