Need a night out? How about dinner for $3 ?!

Do you need a break from holiday cooking?  Desperate for a gift for that person who has everything? You can buy a Restaurant.com $25 gift certificate this weekend only for $3!!! I've found some of my favorite St. Augustine Restaurants through Restaurant.com... that's how I tried this delish empanada appetizer at Casa Maya! Another favorite St. Augustine restaurant, Bistro de Leon, participates.  Chef Poinard was invited to New York City two weeks ago to prepare a specil meal at the James Beard Foundation House... what an honor!  For $3, you can buy a $25 gift … [Read more...]

Villa Zorayda shines during St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights!

Villa Zorayda Nights of Lights St Augustine

** 2012 Nights of Lights update: I've included all this year's dates at the end of this post ** There's something nostalgic about returning to a childhood memory. Saturday night, Villa Zorayda surpassed those memories with the Candlelight Tour they offer during St. Augustine's Nights of Lights. We arrived a tad late- I grossly underestimated Nights of Lights traffic. Fortunately, parking for Villa Zorayda guests is always free and plentiful. A few cookies and other treats remained on the silver trays under the tent on the lawn and I sipped a glass of cranberry punch … [Read more...]

Casa Maya for Dinner

Casa Maya Restaurant St Augustine

"Welcome.  Will you sit inside or out?" Marco Barrera, owner of Casa Maya, greeted my friend & me and pointed us to a table for two in the tiny, shaded courtyard.  Between his accent (he's from the Yucatan area of Mexico) and the creative menus we perused, we knew dinner at this St Augustine restaurant would be authentic. Veggie Empanadas appetizer ($10.95) sounded like a good place to start.  Next, I was hooked on the fish special- mahi with a mango sauce and rice & vegetables ($18 ish).  My eats-on-the-safe-side friend decided to try a tostada topped with ropa … [Read more...]

Bistro de Leon {closed}

Bistro de Leon, French Restaurant St Augustine

**Update: I'm sad to report that Bistro de Leon is closed.** Bistro de Leon's french cuisine fits right in with St. Augustine's multicultural dining scene.  Every dish is freshly prepared & attractively plated... satisfying to all the senses.  While the food would shine at a white tablecloth restaurant, Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard's vision was to make his bistro a comfortable place to gather with friends & the ones we love.  Bravo, Chef Poinard! Chris and I enjoyed our first dinner at Bistro de Leon over a year ago. I still remember the beef tenderloin with … [Read more...]

Pop N Off Gourmet Popcorn {closed}

Pop N Off Popcorn St Augustine Florida

**Update... Pop N Off is closed. This location now houses Tasting Tours' gathering spot before their tours. If you're craving memorable popcorn, stop by Fudge Buckets for Pop N Off popcorn!!** Okay, now I can say St. Augustine has it all!  I discovered 59 flavors of gourmet popcorn at Pop N Off. Open year round in the parlour of a Victorian home, Pop N Off Gourmet Popcorn offers "affordable indulgences".  Locals can ask for an additional 10% discount which sweetens the deal. You'll find few "typical" popcorn flavors (white cheddar & pepper, caramel, 3 cheese) … [Read more...]

St. Augustine Beach

St Augustine Beach Boardwalk Sunset

A couple of weeks ago, we hit Burrito Works Taco Shop on Anastasia Island for dinner and then walked across the street to St. Augustine Beach for sunset.  It's November, so the weather was too cool for a swim in my book- but perfect for bird & surfer watching, splashing and watching the sunset. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll shut up and show you a glimpse of the beauty of St. Augustine Beach / Anastasia Island at sunset. The boardwalk crosses the dunes.  I love the wildflowers and sea oats that thrive here. We had the place {mostly} to … [Read more...]

A1A Burrito Works Taco Shop

St Augustine Beach A1A Burrito Works Taco Shop

A1A Burrito Works Taco Shop Whew! Say that 3x fast! I was introduced to this restaurant as The Taco Shop but have since joined most locals in calling it Burrito Works. You can pick your preferred name. It's a chill place like that.   If you're dining at the St. Augustine Beach location, you can eat on the screened porch, at one of 2 or 3 counter seats inside or at the counters & picnic tables outside- BYO bugspray or pray for a breeze if you're there at sunset.  Or you could walk across A1A and picnic on St Augustine Beach- you wouldn't need napkins if … [Read more...]
