Simply Steps to the 4th of July in St. Augustine

The 4th of July in St. Augustine ranks high on our list of favorite days in St. Augustine. We know that the city will be packed and next to impossible to escape after the fireworks. If you know some of the ins and outs, it may be a more enjoyable day.

Simply Steps to Enjoy the 4th of July in St. Augustine

Get in town EARLY– When I say early, I mean in the morning before the parking garage and all of the lots and spaces are full (street and lot parking will be free with the exception of the garage and the lot in front of the Castillo).

Enjoy lunch in town before the crowd arrives or pack a picnic-Stake your claim on the grass surrounding the fort and do some people watching or some old-fashioned outdoor games.

Dinner-We call in orders for pick up and enjoy a picnic on the lawn while others make reservations to view the fireworks from the balcony seating on the bayfront.

Restrooms-If you cannot find an open one around town, there’s always the porta pots on the fort grounds just for the 4th of July in St. Augustine.

Glow sticks, wands, etc.-Do yourself a favor and pick some up prior to the 4th. My kiddos love this tradition the best.  It also helps keep tabs on the younger ones once the sun goes down.

Fireworks and Concert

The show begins at 6 with a concert and the fireworks following at 9:30. If you have never been in town for the fireworks, you are in for a treat. The fort grounds will be covered with people as well as the surrounding area. We have never found another show that even comes close to 4th of July in St. Augustine. It is the highlight of our year!

Shuttle Service

If this sounds like too long of a day, the trains and trolleys are offering shuttle services from locations on Anastasia Island to the Bridge of Lions. The shuttles run 6pm-midnight. Click here for more information about where to board the shuttle.

Post-Fireworks Show

If you choose not to take the shuttle when the show is over, do not I repeat do not hop in the car and start honking the horn. Why put everyone through this torture? Let the town thin out before trying to leave or better yet stay in town at a hotel or bed and breakfast.

We usually head on over to Ripley’s for their post-fireworks show and shop in their gift shop. This year the Odditorium will be 25% off for anyone entering after 9:30 pm. We may have to stick around and make another visit to see what updates have been added since our last tour.

Just come prepared to enjoy the day and know that everyone else will be in town too!

There’s often some pickup games going on around the fort.
