Date Night: Dinner & a Show

Chris & I make it a point to slip out for “date nights” a couple of times a month.  We always enjoy ourselves- even if we just go for a run together.  But this past Sunday’s date night stands out as a favorite- we enjoyed a delish dinner and then visited a new venue for an amazing show!

We started at Harry’s Restaurant…

Having fun on a Harry's Date Night.

I first tried Harry’s dessert martinis over the holidays.  I’ll never forget that fateful moment when the server brought out Harry’s {seasonal} pumpkin martini…  It was love at first sip!  After that, anytime we were in St. Augustine with time to kill I always voted we head over to Harry’s!!  So when they announced a new specialty martini, I couldn’t wait to try it!

Reader, meet King Cake Martini.

Unlike Pumpkin Pie, I’ve never tasted King Cake.  So I can’t compare the drink to the real thing.  But on a 1-10 I’d give it… a 7 for a dessert martini.  It is sweet, not overly strong, and does taste like cake!  {The pumpkin was definitely at 10.}  Like the pumpkin, the rim of the glass is sugared {love!} and it is poured for a pretty presentation.  The lime syrup is decorative but makes for a very syrupy final few sips.

We like Harry’s because you can make a night of it on the patio- they always have great live music- or you can order as soon as you’re seated and be in-and-out relatively quickly.  Sunday was a quick night because we had a show to catch!!

Harrys Restaurant serves up a Lobster Po' Boy around Mardi Gras.

Our server, Johnna, suggested the Lobster Po’ Boy ($14.99) to Chris.  He said the lobster was clean & sweet, the bread fresh & perfectly toasted.  If I had ordered it, I’d have asked for a side of sauce {I’m saucy like that} but he ate every bite just as it came!

I enjoyed my Mahi Acadiana- well, mostly I enjoyed the cheese grits.  Every time I go, I wish I had just ordered a giant bowl of grits.  They’re so creamy!  Harry’s portions are generous- but I need a Papa Bear bowl of grits!  In between bites of creamy deliciousness, I enjoyed my collards & mahi {which I brought home for lunch the next day! Win!}

We finished our dinner with some Oreo Beignets {they’re only here for a short time… gotta get ’em while they’re here!} then headed North to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.

Ponte Vedra Concert Hall offers unique pre-show entertainment... old vinyl record tracks in the same genre as the evening's show.

We arrived early to some old records playing… literally vinyl records!!  I remember putting Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Pink Floyd’s records on our turntable as a kid so this old school flashback was appreciated!!

The DJ {RJ? Record Jockey?} told me he chooses which records to bring out each show based on the night’s act.  We enjoyed a mix of  classic American musicians, from Bing Crosby to Appalachian type tunes.

If you haven’t heard the Carolina Chocolate Drops yet, <-give ’em a listen.  We clapped, danced and laughed through the set of old-timey music.  Forget going to a movie, the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is closer to my house and such a memorable experience!

After the concert, I was able to meet the drops for a quick photo and to say thanks for a fun date night!!

Carolina Chocolate Drops were so much fun live!

For more info on the PVCH, read my post about Ponte Vedra Concert Hall details.  You can choose a favorite coming band and plan your night around it- try Harry’s or another great St. Augustine restaurant!

Dinner was “on Harry’s” so that we could photograph and share our experience with you.  FCC requires that I share this with you.  I photographed the concert for The Record- check out my blog on St.!

I’ve been looking for a good lobster roll type sandwich. We will have to try theirs out. Sunset Grille is the only other tasty one I know of.
