I don’t love many ice creams. There was Jeni’s Ice Cream in Ohio… but 14 hours is too far to drive for an ice cream cone, no matter how good it is. I had resolved to watch my hubby & kids enjoy ice cream & frozen yogurt wherever we went but live a life of ice cream celibacy… until we were introduced to Cold Cow Ice Cream St Augustine.
My friend Mia was shocked I’d never heard of Cold Cow. “What kind of St. Augustine blogger are you?” she probably wanted to shout. Instead, she politely suggested I head over there first available moment and stop depriving your children of their best childhood memory (or something like that).
So we tried it. And then we went back again & again. This place is amazing! Cold Cow serves up a heaping cone of freshly made ice cream- check out Andrew’s KIDS CONE for $2!! Yes, $2!
Our sensible 2 y.o. requested “banilla” but then had a hard time deciding whether to enjoy her ice cream or go bounce on the bounce house!
What? I didn’t mention the bounce house? Well, they also rent bouncey houses and many days have one set up at both Cold Cow & Cold Calf locations for the kids to have some extra fun {free}.
Your kids can get sugared up and then go bounce off their extra energy!!
Or, if the ice cream line is long as often happens, they can bounce while they wait.
Now I love ice cream. Not any old ice cream- but just about any flavor from Cold Calf. One warning: once you’ve taken the kids, they’ll never go by a bounce house without asking for Cold Cow Ice Cream!!

After a couple of please be still! and use your inside voice! days, we needed wide open space.
We needed somewhere the kids could run, explore and, well, be kids! After asking my local friends on Simply’s facebook page, we found a new park: Moses Creek Conservation Area.
Covering 2,173 acres, Moses Creek protects one of the few remaining undeveloped tidal regions in the area. Locals go there to kayak, hike, bike, camp in St. Augustine, horseback ride and bird… we were just there to run!!
Unlike Guana, the first half of Moses Creek’s trail is very sunny & piney. The good news is this keeps the mosquitoes down. The bad news is it’s hot and, as my 4 year old said, “boring.”
Boring doesn’t last the whole walk, though. When we entered the canopy, I began to like Moses Creek…
yes… still running!
…when we exited with a view of the marsh, I fell in love with Moses Creek. The expansive view of tidal marsh & Intracoastal is serene and so very native. Love it.
I’m looking forward to camping at Moses Creek. I suspect gnats are a problem around sunset so I think I’ll wait for cool weather again- but I think having thousands of acres and a waterfront suite for me and my love would be a fabulous getaway!
The primitive campground was the only place we saw port-a-potties, btw.
After our casual hike through Moses Creek Conservation Area, I learned there is a small bluff at the end of another trail. We haven’t hiked that yet but I’m looking forward to it. I hear it’s a beautiful view of The Real Florida. If you beat me there, tell me all about it!!

Getting there: Find Moses Creek in southeast St. Johns County on the Matanzas River. Drive along State Road (SR) 206- we park in the lot nearest the Intracoastal.
