Athena Restaurant

My hubby and I stopped in Athena Cafe on a crisp December afternoon.  We were headed out on the Freedom for a sunset sail and needed a warm meal for dinch? lunner?  Well, anyway, it was around 3:00 and we were hungry.  Athena Restaurant has a good reputation, but we really knew we were in for an authentic meal when we saw a table surrounded by 3 or 4 couples lingering over their lunch & wine, bantering in Greek.

I deliberated for a while, the menu has everything from Veggie Wraps to Gourmet Burgers & Reubens to Steaks & Chops!  Chris immediately ordered the Classic Greek Combosmart choice!

Spinach pie, pastitsio, mousaka {my personal favorite and new comfort food}, a greek salad and a grape leaf… we could have shared this entree and had room for the Greek Baklava Cheesecake!  Ah well, no regrets because my own Gyro was delish as well.

Now, you can have a gyro… or you can be introduced to Athena Restaurant’s Lamb Souvlaki Gyro.  This sucker was huge!  While most gyros are wrapped up sandwich style, this is plated with a fork and knife.  I was in an adventurous mood, so I cut a slice and still ate it with my fingers.  🙂

Located on the Plaza next to Bistro de Leon, Athena Restaurant serves Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.  They received Best of St. Augustine 2011, have been reviewed by Southern Living and received other recognitions- it’s everything a family restaurant should be!  Athena has been in the family 30 years, they import their olive oil from a family owned grove in Frixa, Greece {which they also sell, along with sun-dried oregano}.

Nephew Adam shared the history of Athena Restaurant and their Greek heritage with pride.  He also recommends Georgie’s Diner & The Alcazar Cafe, which are Chryssaidis family businesses as well.

Our meal and service at Athena Restaurant in St. Augustine were perfect.  We definitely have reason to return- and we’ll bring the kids.  They’ll love the Tzatziki Sauce {yogurt + cucumbers}, Hummus and stuffed Grape Leaves.

Regardless of the time of day you find yourself hungry, Athena is a great option right at the foot of the Bridge of Lions- in the heart of historic St. Augustine.

Address: 14 Cathedral Place
