Bonez Smokehouse

** Update: Some things are too good to be true… Bonez Smokehouse is now closed. 🙁 **

Like all good Southerners, we like BBQ. We’ve tried our fair share and it’s pretty close to impossible to choose one favorite. Smokin’ D’s is the cutest BBQ joint around, Mojo’s is downtown which means great walks around town after dinner and they have great brisket. THE most important thing in a BBQ restaurant to me is… well, I’ll get to that. But Bonez aces it and that’s why Bonez Smokehouse is my current fave BBQ in St. Augustine!! Here are 5 reasons for YOU to fall in love with Bonez…

5 reasons to love Bonez Smokehouse
5 Reasons I love Bonez… I could go on but I’ll just whet you whistle and you can go experience the goodness for yourself!

Reason #1 is they took an eyesore building on the island and made it a really cool lunch/dinner spot! Major props for renovating this restaurant on the Boulevard. It’s clean & cool inside & out now:

Major improvement on the Boulevard… Bonez Smokehouse replaced an eyesore and brings another great food option to the island.

Welcome to Bonez Smokehouse St. Augustine!

Bonez Finger Sink
My kids are enamored with this handwashing station! It’s a fun decor touch and also immensely practical… You don’t have to wait in line for the bathroom to clean up after a messy BBQ sandwich!

Reason #2: Datil Ranch Sauce. Datil is the darling pepper of St. Augustine and Bonez wisely showcased this piquant pepper. It adds a touch of heat to ranch in the Fried Pickle app {$7} my hubby ordered.

Bonez Fried Pickles
Choose between regular and Datil Ranch to dip your fried pickles. I love the touch of heat the datils add to this dip!

Reason #3: Solid BBQ & real fries. I enjoyed the Smokey Joe {$11} brisket & pulled pork sandwich and absolutely adore the smoked turkey (you can try it on the Smokehouse Club {$11.50} or on a platter). The straight up Brisket Sandwich {$8.50} was ok but not the best thing on the menu, IMO.

Try the Smokey Joe! It’s tasty.

Reason #4: Daily Specials worth coming back for! I love the variety Bonez’ special board brings. Every Wednesday, for example, they serve up some amazing smoked wings for $0.50 each! Yes, you read that right 50 cents!! A domestic beer on those nights is $2.50 {microbrew, my preference, is only $3.50}. The specials aren’t an afterthought- they’re all good!

Last visit, I tried this Smoked Cuban off the special board since I’m working on a round-up of St. Augustine’s best Cuban sandwich:

Bonez Smoked Cuban
Bonez’ Smoked Cuban is a-ma-zing! I love the respectful departure from a traditional Cuban.

Reason #5: Dessert The peach cobbler was off the chain. That’s a good thing, y’all. I pushed the ice cream aside and used up my calories on the crunchy topping  & warm, sliced peaches. Oh, who’s kidding? No one counts calories at a BBQ place. LOL But if you do, you can order the chopped salad and not leave disappointed. 😉

Do yourself a favor and order the peach cobbler. No, you’re not too full. Put the rest of the sandwich in a box and get dessert!!

There you have it. My 5 reasons to try Bonez. I didn’t mention the house made sauces, the window where you can see the smoker in action or the sweet tea made like my grandma does. Or the fact that it’s locally owned & operated. Because I’m keeping it at 5. OH! How could I forget?!? The #1 reason I love Bonez is their BBQ Beans! So scratch the renovated building bit… this is definitely the best reason to love Bonez. Their beans are literally my favorite anywhere. Go try them and let me know in the comments what you think! Or tweet me @SimplyStAug.

Here’s a peek of the smoker until you make it in:

That’s one fancy smoker you have there, Bonez!

Ok. Really stopping now. Just go. And get the smoked turkey + bbq beans + cobbler. You’re welcome.

We love blogging but sometimes all these photos = cold food & a long dinner! Bonez generously invited us to dinner to share some photos so we can use our dinner out $ this month for another trip there for baked beans and cobbler and more baked beans! LOL

definitely want to check this place out! we will be visiting St. Augustine in 10 days. Smokin’ D’s has been our standard so far, especially for those beans; can’t wait to compare! btw awesome blog! so glad I found it!

These beans are totally different than Smokin’ D’s. I loooove baked beans, so while the flavor of Smokin’ D’s is good, I couldn’t love the *ranch style*. There is a lot to love at Smokin’ D’s though! It’s a go-to for us, too… especially the whole chicken!

Bonez’ beans are traditional- soft and sweet and ohhhhh so yummy. 😉 Please let me know what you think after you visit! ~Allie O.
