** Update: Some things are too good to be true… Bonez Smokehouse is now closed. š **
Like all good Southerners, we like BBQ. We’ve tried our fair share and it’s pretty close to impossible to choose one favorite. Smokin’ D’sĀ is the cutest BBQ joint around, Mojo’s is downtown which means great walks around town after dinner and they have great brisket. THE most important thing in a BBQ restaurant to me is… well, I’ll get to that. But Bonez aces it and that’s why Bonez Smokehouse is my current fave BBQ in St. Augustine!! Here are 5 reasons for YOU to fall in love with Bonez…

Reason #1 is they took an eyesore building on the island and made it a really cool lunch/dinner spot! Major props for renovating this restaurant on the Boulevard. It’s clean & cool inside & out now:

Reason #2: Datil Ranch Sauce. Datil is the darling pepper of St. Augustine and Bonez wisely showcased this piquantĀ pepper. It adds a touch of heat to ranch in the Fried Pickle app {$7} my hubby ordered.

Reason #3: Solid BBQ & real fries. I enjoyed theĀ Smokey Joe {$11}Ā brisket & pulled pork sandwich and absolutelyĀ adoreĀ the smoked turkey (you can try it on theĀ Smokehouse Club {$11.50}Ā or on a platter). The straight up Brisket Sandwich {$8.50}Ā was ok but not the best thing on the menu, IMO.

Reason #4: Daily Specials worth coming back for!Ā I love the variety Bonez’ special board brings. Every Wednesday, for example, they serve up some amazing smoked wings for $0.50Ā each! Yes, you read that right 50Ā cents!! A domestic beer on those nights is $2.50 {microbrew, my preference, is only $3.50}. The specials aren’t an afterthought- they’re all good!
Last visit, I tried this Smoked Cuban off the special board since I’m working on a round-up of St. Augustine’s best Cuban sandwich:

Reason #5: Dessert The peach cobbler was off the chain. That’s a good thing, y’all. I pushed the ice cream aside and used up my calories on the crunchy topping Ā & warm, sliced peaches. Oh, who’s kidding? No one counts calories at a BBQ place. LOL But if you do, you can order the chopped salad and not leave disappointed. š

There you have it. My 5 reasons to try Bonez. I didn’t mention the house made sauces, the window where you can see the smoker in action or the sweet tea made like my grandma does. Or the fact that it’s locally owned & operated. Because I’m keeping it at 5. OH! How could I forget?!? The #1 reason I love Bonez is their BBQ Beans!Ā So scratch the renovated building bit… this is definitely the best reason to love Bonez. Their beans are literally my favorite anywhere. Go try them and let me know in the comments what you think! Or tweet me @SimplyStAug.
Here’s a peek of the smoker until you make it in:

Ok. Really stopping now. Just go. And get the smoked turkey + bbq beans + cobbler. You’re welcome.

We love blogging but sometimes all these photos = cold food & a long dinner! Bonez generously invited us to dinner to share some photos so we can use our dinner out $ this month for another trip there for baked beans and cobbler and more baked beans! LOL

Oooh- you’ll have to let me know how you think they compare, Tammy! I don’t think any one of our BBQ places is THE ONLY PLACE on its own… all three have excellent parts. But overall I’m loving me some Bonez!!

definitely want to check this place out! we will be visiting St. Augustine in 10 days. Smokin’ D’s has been our standard so far, especially for those beans; can’t wait to compare! btw awesome blog! so glad I found it!
These beans are totally different than Smokin’ D’s. I loooove baked beans, so while the flavor of Smokin’ D’s is good, I couldn’t love the *ranch style*. There is a lot to love at Smokin’ D’s though! It’s a go-to for us, too… especially the whole chicken!
Bonez’ beans are traditional- soft and sweet and ohhhhh so yummy. š Please let me know what you think after you visit! ~Allie O.
