Tropi-Cali Food Truck

St. Augustine was been slow to catch on to the food truck scene. Narrow streets with no extra room for parking and tight city codes initially made food truck ownership challenging. Nevertheless, we have some amazing food trucks. Tropi-Cali Food Truck joins Nalu’s, Crave and Cold Calf Ice Cream Truck in serving up amazing food from tiny kitchens.

TropiCali best chili in St Augustine
It’s hard to choose a favorite dish but I love Troy’s Datil Chili Supremo. They layer  chili, sour cream, guacamole… so much delicousness in one bowl!

I just had to post a pix of that chili… but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning of your visit. First, order from the window and pay the friendly cashier. They recently posted on facebook that the person handling money never prepares food. They’re serious about food safety!

All the food is packed “to go”. But you’re welcome to eat on site! After you order from Tropi-Cali’s window, you can head into the air conditioned building behind the trailer and grab a table in the brightly painted room. {Yes, I said air-conditioned!!}

Air Conditioning makes Tropi Cali a top contender for my favorite food truck in St Augustine!
TropiCali Amphitheater
Tropi-Cali got it’s start at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. You’ll see posters from great local shows on the walls of Tropi-Cali’s dining room when you visit.

The food served from Tropi-Cali is fresh and flavorful. I love that many plates come with maduros. These ripe, sweet plantains are one of my favorite foods in the whole, wide world. And that’s saying a lot.

One complaint my Mom has always had about tex-mex restaurants is that their dishes all taste the same… rice + beans + meat + salsa. This is not true of Tropi-Cali! They layer on flavor with cilantro, shredded cabbage, green onions, locally made sauces, pineapple, shredded carrots, seafood & their specially prepped meats plus the requisite cheese, salsa, tomatoes etc. Check out some of the dishes we’ve tried:

On a recent trip, I ordered my burrito “unwrapped” for a GF option. They’re a friendly, flexible kitchen!

The “Don’t be a Jerk Chicken Platter” ($8).

We’ve had Tacos {3 Veggies for $7} and the salads, too. The rice bowls are my least favorite- it’s not Tropi-Cali’s fault though. I just would be fine if I lived the rest of my life without rice. But I digress… even the rice bowls are pretty good {chicken rice bowl is $6}. Oh, but dat chili!!! It’s never too hot for their Datil Chili {photo up at the top of the post}! A menu item I haven’t tried yet is the Beef Mamoo. Another of their specialties, it’s a gigantic beef burrito big enough to share. The reason I can’t wait to try it is I hear it has sweet plantains inside! Did I mention I love plantains?

Their food is flavorful but in case you need a bit more of a kick, they have a well-stocked hot sauce bar brimming with local Datil sauces! I love this place!

Need a bit more of a kick? Visit the hot sauce bar. I usually use a few just because I can.

Tropi-Cali was one of Wesley’s first dining-out experiences. How apropos since we’ll be raising him in a local-lovin’, food truck eatin’, keep-$-in-the-community foodie family!
