St. Augustine Carousel at Davenport Park

Every local knows about St. Augustine’s Carousel (my kids prefer to call it a Merry Go Round).  But did you know it’s a completely handicap-accessible park?  And did you know it’s only $1 to ride the carousel (free for kids with disabilities!)?  No more speeding by this St. Augustine playground- it’s time you got to know Davenport Park.

Seth & Sarah introduced us to this park before they moved to Tennessee {sniff sniff}.  They’d grab take-out pizza {Pizzalleys, Pizza Time & Pizza Hut are all nearby} and claim a picnic table with their girls for an inexpensive family night.  We’ve continued the tradition.  All six of our kids can ride and it’s still cheaper than Starbucks and a pastry!

After the carousel, we usually push Clara in a baby swing while the big kids play on the monkey bars & big playset.  The whole park is fenced with only 2 gates, so it’s a safe place for the kids to play.

The playground is nestled under oaks, so it’s a bit cooler here.  Play equipment was carefully selected to offer fun for climbers and adventerous little monkeys as well as those needing a helping hand.

There’s plenty of room for everybody…

The clear message at Davenport Park & Merry Go Round is that everyone can play!

  2. Lonnie Davenport says

I want to know how the park came to be, and how it got its name? I had relatives there, once.

That’s a great question, Lonnie! I read that the Davenports donated the land but that was just on a facebook page- not researched or documented or anything. If you learn more, let me know & I’ll update the post with more info! 🙂 ~Allie O.

I have looked high and low to see if the carousel was badly damaged during Mathew. I hope not’. We, my 84 year old brother and me, age 88 and our younger niece thoroughly enjoyed it the first week in October. It is beautiful and so loved by the locals. Thanks!
