Sail Away on Schooner Freedom

Since 1565, St. Augustine has been a seafaring town. The fort, the cross, the lighthouse, the Bridge of Lions and the low, beautiful skyline of the Historic District are all uniquely appreciated from the water. Since 2001, one St. Augustine water tour has sailed beyond the rest- the premier tall ship Freedom. I've heard it said that a good Cap'n keeps a tight ship. By these standards, Captain Jon is a fine man. His crew is friendly and playful yet respectful. The Freedom is clean and orderly and everything is in its proper place. Once the ship is underway, the … [Read more...]

Chef’s Table at Michael’s Tasting Room

There are moments when life seems too good to be true. When hubby and I relax into a plush velvet banquette at Michael's Tasting Room anticipating his expertly prepared 5 course Chef's Table paired with wines, I often lean over to hubs and whisper, "pinch me!" Any evening at Michael's Tasting Room is both delicious and relaxing but the Chef's Table is a unique foodie experience among St. Augustine restaurants. Every Chef's Table experience differs; Michael procures the freshest regional ingredients of the season first and builds a menu around them. He … [Read more...]

Carriage Rides in St. Augustine

While just about any day is a perfect one for a horse and buggy tour of St. Augustine, these gorgeous fall days are absolutely blissful! We climbed into a Southern Carriages buggy for a 45 minute tour a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed a ride narrated with history, local lore and lots of laughs. Clara thought she was in a parade- she waved at every car that passed until she fell asleep in her Daddy's arms. Sweet memories! All horse drawn carriages in St. Augustine follow the same basic route agreed upon with the city. Drivers have some flexibility- especially … [Read more...]

Coquina Condos at Crescent Beach

crescent beach fl

Even though we live 20 minutes from the ocean, we are not beach regulars. Getting there is the first problem... try packing a picnic lunch, floaties, hats & towels then sunscreening up six excited kids. It's no small task, I assure you! That's only the beginning of the effort, though. Bringing six sandy kids home can cause heart failure for the inexperienced! (car, bathing suits, house... SO.MUCH.SAND!!) Add on top of that the fact that I have six of the whitest children on the First Coast- one who burns just walking to the car and we have reasons to limit our trips to … [Read more...]

Catch 27 Restaurant

Catch 27 Shrimp and Grits

Since I wrote this post, Catch has grown up a lot! They moved a block away into a much larger space- from Hypolita Street to Charlotte Street. Read my updated post about Catch 27 <-there. I can not believe it's taken me this long to talk about Catch 27!!!  Believe me, my negligence has nothing to do with the quality of this amazing restaurant... I've recommended Catch 27 as serving the best local fish in St. Augustine countless times on facebook and twitter... now it's time for me to sing their praises on the blog. Catch 27 is my favorite destination for fresh, locally … [Read more...]

The Chocolate Turtle

St Augustine Dessert Restaurant Chocolate Turtle

The Chocolate Turtle closed. In its place, you'll find Hot Shot Bakery with delish, house-baked sweet treats as well as a breakfast and lunch menu (served most of the day). The owners of Chocolate Turtle have opened a place at the foot of the Vilano Bridge near Kingfish Grill called Dessert First Bistro. Definitely check them out! These ladies rock desserts!! In the heart of historic St. Augustine, a quaint historic home is filled with chocolatey goodness. Cakes, tortes, cheesecakes and other decadent desserts fill the case and beckon passersby to stop & sit a spell in … [Read more...]

Centro Restaurant and Piano Bar

Centro Steakhouse and Piano Bar St Augustine

Centro Restaurant and Piano Bar is the new St. Augustine Steakhouse.  White tablecloths, a baby grand piano and a rose on each table hint at the fine dining experience they promise.  Could they fulfill the expectations they set when I walked in the door? Hubby and I popped in late one evening during Centro's 2nd week open unsure of whether they'd still seat us. Although the last diners were leaving, we were welcomed without hesitation- what hospitality!  Turns out they're open from noon to midnight daily- it's nice to be able to order from a full menu late at … [Read more...]
