Corazon Cinema

Tucked away at the end of Granada Street is a local gem- Corazon Cinema and Cafe. The cafe opens for lunch at 11:00 AM and weeknight movies start at 7:00 PM but this venue strives to be more than just a movie theatre. Special events, matinees, room rentals, live music and free parking make Corazon an easy entertainment choice in the heart of St. Augustine.

The Corazon Cinema was lovingly {and gorgeously!} renovated in 2014.

Hubby and I slipped down to Corazon on a quiet weeknight for dinner and a movie. We were both relieved that the beer selection went beyond Bud & Bud Lite. He ordered a local brew without question- Bold City Duke’s Brown Ale comes in a can but Corazon offered a heavy, chilled glass to pour into. Bravo, Corazon!

Salads range from $5.99 for a simple tossed salad to $8.99 for their “famous” chicken salad. Not in salad moods, hubby decided on the Robert Redford ($7.79) – a 1/4 pound all beef burger with potato salad. Y’all know I’m an updated-classic kind of gal… I went for the Hugh Jackman “All muscle and no fat. A truly scrumptious roast beef sandwich with all the fixings.” (also $7.79) The whole menu reads like that and it’s a lot of fun! 🙂

We ordered at the counter before the movie started and our sandwiches were delivered during opening credits. Other snacky options include traditional movie snacks: popcorn, nachos, candy and a fountain Coke machine.

I love the updated nostalgia of Corazon. We heard some tourists beg to keep their old-school tickets as souvenirs!

Just like they used to do it… an attendant comes around and collects these old-school tickets before each show.

As hubby and I headed through the lobby toward our theater, we marveled at the transformation from the old Pot Belly’s Movie Theater to the new, classy Corazon Cinema. Check out the before and after of the lobby area:

What a transformation!

Can you believe that’s the same place!?! In case you never saw the old version, read this blog and you’ll better appreciate the transformation. {Take your time… it’s worth it. I promise.}

The transformation continues… check out the dine-in theatre space! Gone are the old school desk type seats. Instead, comfortable leather chairs surround fun barrel tables.

The updated theater space is cozy and clean.

Owner Karla has poured her heart and a lot of sweat into the aptly named Corazon. She shared that her love of theatre started when, as a girl, her grandmother took her to a similar theater in Winter Park, Florida. She’s proud to provide a place that locals can gather in, visitors can explore and the arts can prosper.

Corazon features a new Sundance or other Indy film every week. They’re open for dine-in or carry-out lunches and dinners. Former Cheese Wheel Sandwich Shop chefs, Joe & Tammy, serve up local favorite recipes.

The new Corazon Cinema and Cafe is a space I’m proud to send visitors to. This classy cinema is a fantastic addition to our local arts & entertainment scene and I’m looking forward to returning regularly. See ya there!

    I was just going to ask you to review Corazon! We were so impressed with it too. We are also worried…last night there were only 4 patrons. St. A is so lucky to have this theatre. We used to have to drive to Riverside in Jacksonville for these types of films and now it’s just a lovely little walk. I hope your review will encourage people to get out and support them. In small towns it’s not often that you have access to films that you might only otherwise see in NYC. Add great food and beer and what more could you want? Kudos to the new owners!

      Glad you made it out, Pauline! Together, we’ll get the word out! 🙂 If they continue with friendly service and great films, I’m hopeful St. Augustine will support Corazon & make it a long-term standard!!
