Jax Water Tours in St. Augustine

** Jax Water Tours is no longer in business. The owner, Captain Brooks, was arrested for his inappropriate behavior with a minor.

Please consider the Schooner Freedom instead whose crew is known and respected by this community. If you prefer a pontoon-style cruise, FLORIDA Water Tours has replaced the water tour from Vilano.

Captain Brooks is on probation with the Florida Department of Corrections until 9/8/2026. He has allegedly reopened his business under the name Atlantic Water Tours, operating out of Vilano Beach Marina as of 3/2017. I do not recommend this tour. Please support the upstanding business owners in our community instead.**

We sold our boat a few years ago. Clara (4) doesn’t even remember lazy days on the water fishing and watching dolphins play in the wake! I decided hopping on a Jax Water Tours boat was much easier than the maintenance of owning a boat so the kiddos and I hurried to Camachee Cove Marina last Saturday for a Dolphin Safari.

Please do not take your children on this boat. It may be called Dolphin Tours or Jax Water Tours or Dolphin Safari… same unscrupulous owner. He is accused of a child s*x scandal.

Signs make it pretty easy to find your way to the boat, but make sure to arrive 15 – 30 minutes before departure. If Kingfish Grill is open during your tour, you can grab a drink or snack for the ride while you wait.

It sprinkled on our drive to the marina but the overcast skies made for perfect boating temperatures! As our boat pulled out of the marina and past the inlet, I was amazed at the seamless blend of intracoastal waters and the Atlantic Ocean. This St. Augustine Dolphin Cruise doesn’t go into the ocean, but the waters seemed calm enough for a trans-Atlantic voyage!

Our captain kept driving the boat his focus but the first mate chatted with the passengers about landmarks as we passed, local lore and funny stories. Since we’d recently climbed to the top of The St. Augustine Lighthouse, our kids were particularly interested in the tale he told of a time when the inlet was much closer to the lighthouse than it is now. That helped the location of this landmark make more sense!

Jax Water Tours operates a large pontoon boat. It’s a smooth, stable ride and there are plenty of seats for passengers as well as deck space to move around. After we passed the inlet, the captain slowed the boat and encouraged everyone to look out for dolphin.

Passengers gather on the deck to look for dolphin playing and feeding in the bay.

We were rewarded immediately! A pod of dolphins played and even chased some fish for a salty brunch. I think we saw 5 or 6- but it’s a little hard to tell since they’re not exactly jumping in unison like at Sea World!

After watching the dolphin play for a while, we headed in for some Historic St. Augustine water views. Isn’t the bayfront pretty!?

Castillo de San Marcos is always my favorite:

Note the white section on the far left of the fort- when under Spanish rule, the entire fort was painted white. I think she’s gorgeous now, in her old age, but imagine how regally she stood in her prime!

There is a bathroom on board so don’t worry about being on the water for 1 1/2 hours. They also keep a cooler full of water bottles ($1.00 each) so you can stay hydrated on the cruise. The captain was friendly and helpful but quiet so it was a relaxing ride. Those that preferred a peaceful cruise sat near the back and gazed over the water instead of huddling up front looking for dolphin with the more chatty first mate.

It can be hard to know what to tip on vacation– up to a 20% gratuity is appropriate {read: dropping $2 in the bucket is being cheap}. Tickets for the Dolphin Safari are $39 each but here’s a 50% discount code for my readers: SJC. Just don’t forget to tip on the full amount just like in a restaurant! No, they didn’t pay me to say that. LOL!

From the littlest in our family to teens, relaxing on the Dolphin Safari was a win. They have several cruise options- from a romantic sunset cruise to a rowdy pontoon pub crawl.

Our family’s protip? Enjoy St. Augustine via water!!! Owning a boat is a ton of work {B.O.A.T. = Break Out Another Thousand} so we were so grateful to spend some time on the water without the hassle.  Thanks, Jax Water Tours!

** I no longer recommend Jax Water Tours due to highly unsavory activities by the owner. You can learn more about the charges against him here and make an informed decision. Please consider the Schooner Freedom instead whose crew is known and respected by this community or Florida Water Tours, owned by a local woman who is working hard for our community’s respect!**
